A group of seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
